| Male bonding behaviour |
[Jul. 31st, 2006|02:43 am] |
In early February 2004 the New York Times reported a male pair of Chinstrap penguins in the Central Park Zoo in New York City were partnered and even successfully hatched a female chick from an egg. Other penguins in New York have also been reported to be forming same-sex pairs.
This was the basis for the children's picture book And Tango Makes Three. The couple about whom the book was based, Roy and Silo, would see further interesting developments in their relationship when in September 2005, Silo left Roy for a female penguin, only to come back to Roy in a few weeks.
Zoos in Japan and Germany have also documented male penguin couples. The couples have been shown to build nests together and use a stone to replace an egg in the nest. Researchers at Rikkyo University in Tokyo, found twenty such pairs at sixteen major aquariums and zoos in Japan. Bremerhaven Zoo in Germany attempted to break up the male couples by importing female penguins from Sweden and separating the male couples; they were unsuccessful. The zoo director stated the relationships were too strong between the couples.

im back on this side of the country.
i've got to get a life, seriously. i worked for 55 minutes today. what the hell?
this morning i was in the Hotlanta airport: me, stretching across the seats of Concourse C, unfamiliar people moving around me, whilst i drool on my makeshift t-shirt pillow. sleep is good.
grant picked me up and briefed me on our schedule. "we have a busy day." wal-mart, nap for me, murderball at 2, work at 4, catch27 later tonight (not my idea). got out of the mandatory catch 27 sign ups.
tomorrow grant and i begin "Operation: Get Buff" well, im beginning it anyway, he is just continuing. i need to stop eating disgusting foods. today i got a cinnamon roll at wal-mart (yeah, i know) icing overload, one bite, the gag reflex was triggered, but i managed to keep that bit down and the rest of the roll was deposited in the trash. this lead me to the realization that i need to eat better. not because im afraid of getting fat, im just tired of being out of shape, which this weekend proved to be all too true.
almost every place we ate this weekend had chopsticks as a utensil option. Noodles & Company was even kind enough to supply it's customers with "Chopstick Helpers" for the novice noodle eater. erin and i scoffed at them, being the accomplished chopstick users we are. but that didn't stop us from shanghaing a pair.
fancy schmancy dinner on sunday. actually it wasnt that fancy, but thats not to say we werent. it was tie and cuff-links and polka-dots fancy. our waiter kept running outside every few minites to pet his dog and then jogging back in to serve food. this leads me to believe boulder's health regulations may not be up to snuff. then back home for to dance.
things i forgot to get: toothpaste, this quilt i keep hearing so much about, a scottish-irish dance demonstration, 3 pennies, and a person.
fyi: picnics are better on the tops of mountians.
waterfalls and mountians, movies and picnics, blankets and pillows. i must be crazy to be this crazy about someone.
"we said it was the rain that kept us indoors, but i don't know why, it was only sprinkling" |
